Song of the day:
I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in San Jose last night, and it was so good! I saw the show a few years ago in San Francisco and remembered absolutely nothing about it. Like did I sleep through that show? Either this is a completely new rendition or I have blocked out everything before the pandemic. Anyway…
It was nice to sit in the theatre for a few hours, to be entertained by music both familiar and new, and a story that has always been fascinating. It was also nice that it wasn’t sold out so there was no one in the four seats next to me or in the five or six seats in front of me. I sat on the aisle and there was no one directly behind me either. I still wore my N95 mask and goggles, mind you, but it felt like a safe outing. If you’re in San Jose and looking for something fun to do (and you’re vaccinated, because it’s required), I would suggest taking in one of the shows. It only plays through Sunday but you’ve got a little time.
I fell in love with the original Gene Wilder movie years ago, and while it doesn’t completely follow the book it’s still so, so good because, well, Gene Wilder. I’ve never understood why it didn’t follow the book…I should look that up one of these days. Maybe the squirrels were on strike or something. The Johnny Depp version was true to the book but I didn’t like it all that much. Johnny was too…something. It just didn’t work for me. Tonight’s version was more Gene Wilder-esque but followed the book more closely. And again, it was great. The actor playing Willie Wonka was excellent, as was the kid who played Charlie, and the Oompa Loompas were exceptional.
And look, I got my own squirrel!
He’d probably look more majestic if I took that tag off his head…ah well.
I believe there’s a new movie coming out related to this story, but I’m not clear if it’s another remake or something new. Apparently I need to do some research on that as well. If I’m not mistaken it stars Timothée Chalamet so I’m sure it can’t be all bad.
Okay, I did some research…coming in 2023…
Any thoughts on the movies? Have you seen the musical? Let me know in the comments.
