Song of the day:
Wayback Wednesday
For today’s post I’m taking it all the way back to last weekend. I decided to stay in San Francisco Saturday night and take in a show that evening and another on Sunday afternoon. These shows were part of my Broadway San Francisco membership and were originally spread out over the past two Sundays, but I thought it made more sense to combine them into one weekend and take a little break from reality. It was nice to stay in a hotel, eat some good food, and take in a few San Francisco sights.
Saturday’s show was Beetlejuice, based on the movie from a million years ago, one of Michael Keaton’s best performances. I couldn’t imagine how they’d do it on the stage, and as a musical no less, but they absolutely did and it was great. The actor playing the lead role was magnificent and so, so funny. And the young girl playing the other lead was ridiculously good - and only 18 years old from what I heard. I had no idea how much of a cult classic the movie was, nor did I know people would be dressed in costumes for the show. It was fun to see everyone’s outfits. If you like shows that are absolutely bonkers and hilarious - and a little irreverent - I highly recommend checking this one out.
Sunday’s show was completely different; the stage version of Frozen, based on the Disney animated movie. I liked both Frozen movies but they aren’t my favorite Disney animated movies. Still, I’ve seen them more than once and have always thought the music was great. I was curious to see how they’d deal with the whole ice situation on the stage, and they did a great job. There were some very cool effects and at times the stage absolutely glistened. The big song, Let it Go, was excellent, both the main version and the reprise, and a couple of the other songs were good, too, but overall it was actually kind of a boring show. I will admit to nodding off more than once. They did have really good merchandise though, which you can see in the photo gallery below. So there’s that. I will say, the kids that were in the audience absolutely loved it and really, that’s who it was for, so I think it was a success. I still maintain that the best stage version of an animated Disney movie is The Lion King. I’ve seen Beauty and the Beast and it was fine, but I didn’t care for Aladdin. It will be interesting to see what they bring to the stage next…I’m sure it’s already in the works.
In the middle of all those activities I met my friend Diane for a delicious breakfast where we watched the exciting end of the World Cup (the only moments of the World Cup I’ve ever watched in my life) and had fun catching up. I also enjoyed a quick trip to The Ferry Building where I visited the Mariposa gluten-free bakery and spent far too much money. So far, all the treats have been delicious. I will definitely return.
So all in all a good weekend, and now I’m on the countdown to a nice long vacation. Today is my last day in the office until January 9 - woo hoo!! I’m heading to Colorado and Wyoming to visit friends and family, and it’s going to be wicked cold. I’m literally going to DSW after work today to buy some winter boots because multiple days look to have below zero temps. **shivers**
I’ll have a few days off when I get home to relax and do some things around the house, like watch movies, eat and clean out the closets. This will likely be my last post until I get back to town so I want to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. And who knows, I may pop in again before 2022 ends…you just never know about me…
