Song of the day:
Wayback Wednesday
Since I’ve been out of pocket for a week or so I thought I’d share a few photos of what I’ve been doing instead of writing…so it’s not too wayback, but this all happened before today…
Celebrating with The Mother and Frank in Colorado (her birthday, Mother’s Day, and the sale of their house)
Visiting a friend in Wyoming and meeting a horse and a puppy
Coldplay and H.E.R. at Levi Stadium
And more…
Despite all the fun I’ve been having, it isn’t lost on me that things around the world, and especially in this country right now, are absolutely insane. A lot of people died from hate-fueled shootings over the weekend. It’s happening nearly every day again and it’s beyond heartbreaking. I’m angry and frustrated and exhausted. I can’t imagine what the Black and Asian communities are feeling right now. It’s long past time for better legislation to be implemented but I honestly don’t see anything changing at this point. If they didn’t change anything after Sandy Hook, well…here we are, a whole lot of years later.
The possibility of Roe v Wade being overturned is very real, and while it doesn’t impact me personally, it’s still a horrifying prospect. Numerous states are prepared to enact unfathomably restrictive laws regarding abortion and birth control, and it’s truly terrifying. This is not about being pro life at all but about controlling women. It’s disgusting. But truthfully, the fact that Roe has not been codified into law is absolutely absurd. It was only a matter of time before the Supreme Court got to this point. And it will only be a matter of time before they start looking at other rulings and preparing to overturn them as well - think same sex marriage and voting rights. These all need to be made law. Now. It all comes down to voting so please, please, please exercise your right to do so, and help elect senators and representatives who are focused on what’s best for people, not for their own wallets.
There is so much going on all the time, and some days it’s hard to process. I encourage you to take time away from the news, to rest and focus on the good, to find some joy, to laugh. We can’t ignore what’s going on around us but we can’t let it run our lives either. We have to refresh our hearts and minds in order to get through the hard days, and there are a lot of hard days. I can’t tell you how to do that as it’s different for everyone, but I encourage you to find what works for you, what helps you refocus and rest, what helps you get through the day.
And if all else fails, watch last night’s episode of This Is Us and cry your eyes out. Sometimes that’s the most cathartic thing you can do.
I came across the following quote online earlier this week and thought it relevant to share here today.
"All the energy you put into things you can't control comes at the expense of things you can control. When you focus on what you can control, there is always an action you can take to put yourself in a better position. When you focus on things you can't control you tend to freeze, unsure of what to do, and you wait."
Hang in there, everyone…
