Song of the day:
Wakanda Forever
So. The teaser trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the long-awaited sequel to Black Panther, dropped yesterday and WOW. It is beautiful, emotional, action-packed, and exciting. And it seems clear that it’s a giant tribute to Chadwick Boseman. As it should be.
There are new characters being introduced, old characters revisited and of course, characters who are no longer there. There is sadness and anger, and what looks like some joy, and there is once again some incredible music. There is speculation as to who owns the panther claws at the end, and while I never read the comics it seems clear who it should be if they follow them. The question is, will they? Or did Ryan Coogler go his own way with a plan to surprise everyone? We’ll know for sure on November 11.
And how delightful that I don’t have to work on November 11 so I can hang out in Wakanda all day if I want to. And you never know, I just might.
I watched a lot of reaction videos to the trailer last night, and there is a lot of emotion. I cried when I saw the trailer for the first time yesterday afternoon, and again this morning when I put it in this post. There was so much reported about turmoil on the set, the delays due to COVID and such, and of course, the genuine wonder at how they were going to handle Chadwick’s death. This movie had the potential to never get made, but somehow they did it. From the first note of the music to the power in Angela Bassett’s voice midway through, this trailer is perfect. And it’s just the teaser! I can’t wait until they release the actual trailer.
It’s still hard to believe that Chadwick Boseman no longer walks this earth. Or that it’s been almost two years since he passed. I think one of the lyrics from my song of the day says it best: “The world's less beautiful since you've been away.”
