Song of the day:
Video of the day (this will make more sense once you read what’s below):
Before I get into today’s TV topic I must remind you that the fabulous Allison Larkin’s new book, The People We Keep, is out in the world today. Do yourself a favor and get a copy. I’ve loved all of Allie’s books and this one just might be the best one yet.
Little River, New York, 1994: April Sawicki is living in a run-down motorhome, flunking out of school, and picking up shifts at the local diner. But when April realizes she’s finally had enough—enough of her selfish, absent father and barely surviving in an unfeeling town—she decides to make a break for it. Stealing a car and with only her music to keep her company, April hits the road, determined to live life on her own terms.
She manages to scrape together a meaningful existence on the road, encountering people and places that grab hold of her heart. From lifelong friendships to tragic heartbreaks, April chronicles her journey in the beautiful music she creates as she discovers that home is with the people you choose to keep.
TV Tuesday
Today’s topic: shows that ended too soon, at least according to me.
It’s hard to know which shows will stick and which will get kicked to the curb, but on many occasions a show I’ve loved, and one I thought the world love, gets cancelled after a season or two. So, here are a few of those that I wish would have been given a chance to continue.
Firefly - I mean one season?! Come on. That’s just ridiculous. That genius deserved several more seasons. I mean there’s literally a line that says, “I could kill you with my brain.” The writing was exceptional, the concept bizarre yet fun, and also, Nathan Fillion.
My So-Called Life - Again, one season?! We could have definitely used a lot more Jared Leto leaning and more teen angst. Still, that one season was a good one.
Pushing Daisies - This show was so weirdly perfect that I was honestly surprised it caught on. The concept was wild, the cast was phenomenal, and it all just worked. Also, there was pie.
Eli Stone - This one seemed to disappear in the dark of the night. Jonny Lee Miller is one of my favorites and this role was one of his best. To be fair, the concept of the show was limited in scope but I thought it could have hung on for another couple of seasons.
Jack & Bobby - I absolutely loved the premise of this show and was dumbfounded that they cancelled it after only one season. Maybe it was ahead of its time, maybe the time slot was wrong…I don’t know, but this one was highly disappointing.
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - This show was one of Aaron Sorkin’s brilliant ideas and it should have worked. It’s problem was that it came out around the same time as 30 Rock and well, that one took off and this one didn’t. But this one was exceptional, and I will never forget the episode written around the Hurricane Katrina musicians. Truly one of the most powerful episodes of TV I’ve ever seen. The video linked above is from that beautiful episode and features real New Orleans musicians.
There are countless others out there that got the boot too soon, but these are the ones I always think of when I wish there could have been more.
What about you? Is there a show you wish would have continued on?
I loved Jack & Bobby too! The cast was so good! Christine Lahti and Bradley Cooper!
