1926 - Beat generation poet and counterculture figure Allen Ginsberg was born. Ginsberg’s poem "Howl" was the subject of a landmark obscenity trial for its explicit reference to homosexuality (among other things), which at the time was illegal throughout the United States. After a widely publicized trial, the obscenity charge was dismissed as "Howl" was deemed to have "redeeming social importance." (Arlington Public Library)
2000 - Italian Agricultural Minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio (born 13 March 1959)announces that he’s bisexual, becoming the first openly bi member of the Italian government. (Ronni Sanlo, Ed. D.)
2018 - Guyana held its first gay pride parade, with the country’s gay rights activists accusing the three-year old government as well as the opposition of breaking their election campaign promises to outlaw discrimination against vulnerable groups. (Ronni Sanlo, Ed. D.)
Throwback Thursday
Some of my staff mentioned going berry picking over the long weekend, and I was reminded of the one and only time I did it. It was fun but extremely hard work. The fresh strawberries were absolutely worth it though. And I filled up that whole basket!
