This is 54…

Happy Birthday to Me! I may add a tiara to this outfit later. I’ll see how the day goes.

To celebrate my 54th birthday I thought I’d share 54 facts about me that you may or may not know…please enjoy.

1. I am an only child (if you didn’t know this one then you must not actually know me in real life - hey, thanks for reading anyway!!)

2. I am also an only grandchild on both sides

3. I have a bachelor’s degree in marketing

4. And a master’s degree in sports management

5. I once had a job as an ice cream bike driver…for about 3 days

6. I broke my wrist when I was 7 after falling off the jungle gym at recess

7. I was fired from working in a furniture store…thank goodness; that job was awful

8. I worked at 2 different McDonald’s in college

9. I worked concessions at University of Wyoming football and basketball games in high school (and believe me, that nacho cheese is NASTY)

10. Even though I love my Honda, my favorite car will always be my 1984 Mustang

11. I was the graduate assistant for the 1992 NCAA Championship Rifle Team at West Virginia University, and I have the trophy and ring to prove it

12. I was in the stadium when the San Francisco Giants clinched the division in 2010 (you may recall that they went on to win the World Series that year)

13. I was also in the stadium for the home opener of the Giants in 2010 when Matt Nathanson sang the national anthem

14. I have seen the musical Hamilton 13 times

15. I collect elephants and have well over 200 of them in various forms

16. I used to collect bells and still have quite a few of them packed in a box somewhere

17. I hate making my bed and only do it when I change the sheets or when I leave town

18. I sprained my knee in college playing racquetball

19. I became a Christian when I was 7 years old

20. I co-led Sunday school for kids at a small mountain church when I was in high school

21. I sang a song written by a friend (and fellow graduate) at my high school graduation

22. I’ve done karaoke exactly once and it was not my favorite

23. I’ve worked at 5 different universities

24. In May I will have lived in California 24 years

25. And in June I will have 24 years of service in the California State University system

26. I hate peas

27. And bananas

28. And also tomatoes

29. I love potatoes

30. And chicken

31. And popcorn

32. I used to have a natural blonde streak in my hair but it faded in my 30s

33. I play the piano and the flute

34. And I sing

35. I prefer to sit in the back row of a movie theatre, in the middle if possible

36. I have no problem not leaving my house for several days in a row

37. I have a black thumb…I killed a cactus once because I under-watered it

38. After high school I only read non-fiction; I dove back into fiction books when Harry Potter came along

39. I’ve traveled to two foreign countries: Mexico and Grand Cayman (on a cruise)

40. I’ve been to 41 states, 2 only in the airport though so really just 39

41. I’ve lived in 8 states

42. I’ve been on exactly one cruise and that was enough

43. I managed not to swoon too badly when I met Jared Leto

44. I’ve been to 6 Major League Baseball parks

45. My favorite MLB teams are the Yankees and Giants

46. My favorite NFL teams are the Steelers and Bears

47. My favorite NBA teams are the Nuggets, Spurs and Warriors

48. My favorite NHL teams are the Sharks (duh) and Rangers

49. I sleep between 5 and 6 hours most nights

50. I love a good afternoon nap

51. I love to look at the ocean but don’t want to get in

52. I’d prefer, however, to look at the mountains

53. I have four Christmas trees and usually keep them up until some time in March

54. I still have a stuffed frog that I got when I was a baby; his name is Fred

Black History Month / Rosa Parks

On February 4, 1913, “The Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement”, Rosa Parks, was born in Tuskegee, Alabama. She was the first African American woman to trigger the largest and most successful mass movement against racial segregation in all of history when she refused to give up her bus seat for a white man in 1955.

Lunar New Year / Why Red?

Red is considered the colour of luck. Once the new year arrives, new red outfits are worn to visit relatives and friends, to exchange blessings and gifts. During these visits, children will get red paper envelopes filled with cash notes (红包), symbolising that bad luck is driven away and good fortune is passed on. Apart from visiting loved ones, people also visit temples to worship ancestors and pray for health, success, fortune and a better year. (Source: The Conversation)
