Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Some of you probably know what that means while for others, it may be a new concept. Advent is celebrated in numerous Christian churches, and has been around since 300 A.D. I’ve had an Advent wreath at home for many years and take time to light the candles each Sunday. I usually read a few verses, say a short prayer, and every now and then I do a little singing. Please forgive my struggle to breathe in the video below. I don’t sing that much these days so my lungs aren’t used to working that hard. Nonetheless, I wanted to share a little of my tradition with you.
The first candle symbolizes hope and is called The Prophet’s Candle. The purple color symbolizes royalty, repentance, and fasting.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9: 6
I was unable to see the video but I absolutely love this!!! I think I am going to get some candles as I always celebrated Advent at church. But church is the building............
This is our first year having an Advent wreath. We've always just done it at church before - at least since joining MCC; but this year our pastor is encouraging all of us to create our own DIY wreaths. We light them together at the beginning of each service.
I'll post a picture of ours on IG so you can see it
