I was having a good morning…listening to new music, getting to work early, having a good chat with a staff member…I was getting ready to post a Happy Friday! message on my work Twitter and then I saw the news.
(you can read the whole decision here)
And look, I’m well past child-bearing years and have no idea if I would have personally chosen to have an abortion if I were in that position, but the bottom line is, it would have been my choice. And in California it still would be, as well as a number of other states. But over half of this country is giddy with sick joy that they now get to restrict a woman’s right to choose what happens with her body. And let’s be very clear, this has nothing to do with saving children or whatever, this is all about controlling women. That’s what it’s always been about, and it’s sickening.
And this is just the beginning. Justice Thomas said very clearly that he believes they should revisit the decisions related to birth control and same-sex marriage. And this court will likely do exactly the same thing with those that it did today. It’s truly horrifying how many rights are being stripped away because of this hyper-conservative court that was packed by Donald Trump and his cronies through zero amounts of due process.
Still think this is a great country to live in? Think again. Even if this decision doesn’t affect you personally, one of the others will. Or it will affect someone you love. It will affect your colleagues, your neighbors, members of your church, friends of your kids, the servers in your favorite restaurant, and so many more.
If it isn’t clear today how critical voting at every level of government is, then I don’t know what more to say. This is what we get when people decide not to vote because they don’t like the chosen candidate or because they believe their vote doesn’t matter. They all matter. Every single vote. And, at least for now, we all still have the right to do that.
If like me this decision pretty much ruined your day, please make sure to take time away from social media, away from the news, away from the internet and just breathe. Have a nice meal, read a book, take a walk, do a puzzle…take care of yourself and your loved ones. The fight has to continue but we definitely need a minute or two to mentally prepare.
