Song of the day:
Oh hi, it’s me…
Let’s start with Moulin Rouge, the Broadway musical now on tour in San Francisco…actually, let’s take it back to 2001 when the movie Moulin Rouge hit theaters. I was excited about it…and was then wholly disappointed. It just wasn’t for me at that time. I can’t fully explain why but it didn’t suit. And so that was that. And then they made it a stage musical, and it won all kinds of Tonys, and still, I wasn’t excited. But then I started to see the clips of Aaron Tveit singing the male lead and well, it was good. And so, when I learned it was going to be in the season ticket package for my Broadway in San Francisco, I got more excited. On Saturday night my friend Stephanie and I journeyed north and took in the spectacle. And it was magnificent. The set was gorgeous, the dancing was exceptional, the music perfect, and the singing glorious. Also, there was a giant elephant. If you have the chance to see this show, do it. I promise that you’ll be entertained. Also, there’s a lot of confetti, some of which came home with me.
Now normally our Broadway SF shows are on Sunday afternoons, but we had to reschedule the last three shows (more on the other two below) and could only do weekend evenings. That means a late night coming home, and Saturday was no different. We got back around 11:45 and I was starving so I decided to swing through Jack in the Box to get some midnight tacos. But y’all…
I got to the drive through line and a green truck pulled in just before me. There was also a car at the window and one at the ordering place. So I waited. And waited. And finally the orderer moved forward, but the green truck in front of me did not. And so I waited some more. When it seemed clear they weren’t going to move I flashed my lights figuring they just got distracted by their phone. There was also a car behind me waiting. And still, no movement from the green truck. Thankfully I was able to pull through the line and go around and pull in front of the truck, right at the ordering place. And still, no movement from the truck. When I looked back at the driver it seemed clear he had fallen asleep or passed out. I wondered if I should get help and figured I would tell the Jack in the Box worker about it once they came on the intercom. But they didn’t come on. For several minutes. I thought about getting out of the car to make sure this person was okay, but it was midnight and I was by myself and no. That was not an option. When the worker still hadn’t come on to take my order I decided to head home. I figured God had the situation with the person in the truck under control. Meanwhile, I was still starving when I got home so I air fried a chicken tender and some tater tots. But I still wanted tacos. And so…
I took my chances with Door Dash on Sunday and ordered tacos. And by some magical happenstance they were actually delivered correctly. As opposed to last week when they brought me the wrong tacos, which I couldn’t eat because GLUTEN. But today’s were good. And still, they didn’t satisfy like those midnight JITB tacos would have. I’m getting those tacos at some point this week…I feel like I have to at this point.
About those other two Broadway SF shows we had to reschedule…one was the reimagined classic, Oklahoma, and the other was a play, To Kill a Mockingbird. Let’s start with Oklahoma…
I was actually in a production of Oklahoma in high school (I was in the chorus), so I know the show pretty well. It’s classic music and while, yes some of it is highly problematic in the light of today, it’s still a great show. The original that is. Not whatever I watched on stage a couple of weeks ago. That was not good. Like Into the Woods not good. So much not goodness that we left at intermission and went to In-n-Out. Maybe we weren’t in the mood, but there was nothing about it that we liked. I heard from a friend in NYC who saw it on Broadway pre-pandemic, and she really liked it. Maybe with that cast it would have been better. I don’t know. It’s always been kinda dark, but this version took that to a whole new level.
To Kill a Mockingbird, on the other hand, was absolutely brilliant. We loved everything about it. I’m sure many of you have read the book so you know it’s heavy subject matter, but Aaron Sorkin’s version added a lot of humor. It also moved very fast with the pacing and his dialogue, much of which was word for word from the book. Also, Richard Thomas (John Boy!) put on an acting clinic as Atticus Fitch. But then, all of the actors were exceptional. It’s truly magnificent, and I highly recommend catching it if you can. It’s in SF for another two weeks then it’s headed out across the country. Go see this play!
And finally…I know I haven’t posted in almost a month. I honestly don’t know where the time goes. As it stands, I’m writing this at midnight when I should be sleeping, but alas, here we are.
For those who didn’t get a text or in-person update from me about Frank, he came home from rehab last Thursday - YAY!! - and is doing pretty well. He’s still sleeping a lot but he and mom are going down to eat with friends in their retirement village twice day most days, so that’s really good. There will be some follow up physical therapy and home health which should start later this week or early next. Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers and well wishes.
And in other news…I got the latest COVID booster, as well as my flu shot. Have you gotten yours yet? DO IT! Work has been bonkers, but I had a new employee start last week, and my whole team had a nice off-site meeting Friday afternoon in a glorious location (see below) that came with a cute dog. Full disclosure, one of my employees lives here. Yeah, it’s nice. I’ve been watching a lot of TV, and I do mean a lot (all the fall shows are starting and some of my favorite streaming series are back), and I’ve been reading books, too. Oh, and eating. Because obviously.
Okay, I better wrap this up because that alarm is gonna go off in a few hours and then I’ve got a full day of zoom meetings ahead…at least I’ll be working from home. Have a great Monday!
