Song of the day:
I’ve been revisiting a lot of Matt Nathanson moments lately because he just started a Patreon and it’s been awesome so far. He’s been interacting with supporters a lot and has already posted a couple of songs. The song above is one of my favorites but I’d never seen this clip from the Jimmy Kimmel show. Very cool. I still have no idea how he isn’t a massive star, but honestly, I think he prefers his life how it is. And now with Patreon he gets to do what he wants.
I’ve been aware of Matt Nathanson since the early 2000s and have seen him live a number of times in various venues. His headlining shows are part concert, part comedy show, and they’re absolutely brilliant. He is wickedly talented and so, so funny. The last time I saw him play was on his birthday in 2019. Little did I know that it would be several years before I got to see him again. But if I never saw him live again, the memory of that show alone would be enough. Thankfully I have like 25 more to remember as well. And hopefully there will be more shows in the future.
During the pandemic Matt released a song-for-song cover of U2’s Achtung Baby, which happens to be my favorite U2 album. It’s also Matt’s favorite U2 album. He’s a huge fan of the band, which just endears me to him more. The album is brilliant, and I know Bono would be pleased. He did something similar with a Def Leppard album a few years earlier. I honestly think he can cover anyone and make it sound amazing.
It’s because of Matt Nathanson that I found other artists such as Todd Carey, who I’ve written about before, and Nathan Angelo, Ernie Halter, Brendan James, and many more. It’s because of him that I know my friends Debbie and Alison, who I met in line at a show in Anaheim, as well as other friends across the country who I’ve met at various Matt shows. Shoot, I even saw Matt on a boat!
I’m so excited about how he’s going to use his Patreon and what he’s going to share. I think it’s gonna be pretty special. If you like good music and have a few extra dollars to spare I would highly encourage you to check it out.
Here’s the first pic I ever got with Matt…maybe 2008? You can tell it wasn’t taken with a fancy iPhone but it’s still one of my favorites.
And here’s one of the last ones I have with him from 2016…clearly it’s time for a new photo!
Tell me about some of your favorite artists in the comments!
Video of the day:
One of my favorite Matt songs is called Bill Murray. Now, a whole lot has come out about Bill Murray recently, and it shouldn’t have surprised any of us that he was like a lot of other actors and not really the best human, but alas, here we are. I still think the song is brilliant though, and this live version I happened to record at Mountain Winery is still an all-time favorite. Most of the fans were there to see the headliner and were not really paying attention. They didn’t realize what the song was about and are laughing at the beginning, but you can feel when they click in because the whole mood changes. It was a truly spectacular moment. Please enjoy and have a great day!
