Two years ago on this day I celebrated 20 years of service with SJSU (including time spent at CSU East Bay) with my parents, other honorees, and employees. You remember those days right? When you could gather with people? In places that weren’t your house?
Last year on this day I went to the Sharks game. Little did I know at the time it would be the last one I’d attend for a while. I had tickets to the game the next day but decided not to go since I was packing and getting ready for my trip to New York. Now I wish I’d gone even though the Sharks lost that game (and the one I did attend).
Today, I sat on my couch, watched church, and had some hot tea. Which is my normal Sunday routine now. Life is so different now. I look forward to the day when we can gather again for events and games and even just dinner. I look forward to seeing my family and friends in person. I look forward to cheering for my Sharks and seeing my favorite band. I still can’t imagine doing any of that until next year, but I certainly hope it’s sooner than that.
Tomorrow I get my first vaccine shot. If I’m lucky, maybe they will have the J & J shot so I only have to go once. Fingers crossed! I know many of you have already started or finished the vaccination process, which is fantastic. I will feel better about doing things once everyone is vaccinated, though I’m still not gonna be crazy about it. I’m still going to wear a mask and socially distance and mostly stay at home for a while. There are just too many people being reckless and not following the rules, and until the virus is much more contained, doing things is just not worth it.
And so, with the time I saved not going to a game or seeing people today, I wrote this little parody to the tune of Do You Want to Build a Snowman from Frozen. You’re welcome. (Don’t mind my eyes wandering to my words.)
Here are the words in case you can’t (or don’t want to) watch the video:
Do you wanna hang on FaceTime?
Do you wanna have a Zoom?
I used to see you face to face
But now this virus locked me in my room!
We used to go to dinner
But now we can’t
When will this madness end?
Do you wanna hang on FaceTime?
It doesn't have to be on FaceTime.
Did you get your vaccine shot yet?
Are you still staying in your room?
I see the light begin to shine
After the year that we’ve been through!
What happens when it’s over?
Do we go back
To how it used to be?
Do you wanna grab some dinner?
Maybe soon.
