Song of the day:
Today I’m thankful for bookstores and the random - but amazing - books you find in them. Like the book I’m currently reading, The Dictionary People. This is not a book I would normally pick up - it’s non-fiction to start with, and who wants to read a book about a dictionary, right? But there was just something about it that drew me in. As I was wandering through the store I saw it on a table and read the book jacket. I then put it down and continued on my journey. But I kept thinking about it. As I made my way back past the table where it was, I read the book jacket again. I can’t explain why, but I knew I had to read this book. And it’s excellent so far! Who knew a book about the people who made the Oxford English Dictionary would be so interesting?! Who even knew how the OED even got started? I certainly didn’t, but it’s a fascinating tale, and I’m learning a LOT. I highly recommend this one, especially if you’re a lover of words and dictionaries and books and cool facts and…you get the picture. Just read it!
This is why browsing bookstores is one of my favorite things to do. Yes, it’s also a dangerous thing to do because there are SO MANY BOOKS!! And there have definitely been a few that I’ve picked up and regretted because they just weren’t good, at least to me, but every now and then you come across one like this that hits just right. You can’t get that same feeling scrolling through Amazon or other online book sellers. It only happens in physical bookstores, which is why I try to buy books in person these days, as opposed to online. Now look, I get it, online - especially through Amazon - is a lot less expensive and way more convenient, but it will never be the same as wandering through aisles of books. But maybe that’s just me…
