Song of the day:
Seriously, how is it almost June?!
I have no idea where the last five months have gone. I feel like everything since February 1 has been a blur. And now it’s almost June. Wow.
I went to the ATM a few days ago and the bank wished me Happy Anniversary for banking with them for 25 years. Yeah. I’ve lived here 25 years and have had the same bank the whole time. That’s another wow because I have no idea how that happened.
When I moved here in 1998 I could not have imagined I would still be here, but I guess this is where I was supposed to be all along. I’ve lived here longer than anywhere else I’ve ever lived. Longer by a lot. I guess I like it. :-)
I know it’s been a couple of weeks since I posted so let me catch you up on what’s been happening over here before it actually IS June.
Surprised my mom for Mother’s Day and flew out for a quick overnight trip. We ate all the food and watched all the things on TV. It was great. Looking forward to her coming out here next month.
Last weekend I drove north to spend a night with Matt Nathanson and Matchbox Twenty, and it was glorious. These are two of my all-time favorite artists and Matt and Rob Thomas (MB20’s lead singer) are two of the best songwriters on the planet. If you have a chance to see this tour, do it. It will not disappoint.
I loved the music but wow, I really didn’t like being in the crowd of concertgoers. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, maybe it’s because I don’t go to as many concerts these days and am simply not used to it, or maybe I’m still not confident that COVID won’t find me again. I was one of maybe five people wearing a mask, and even though the concert was outside I didn’t love it. So many people are still getting COVID every day, and when I woke up congested and feeling horrible three days after the show I was certain I had it again. I didn’t, thankfully, it was just a horrible allergy week, but still…it was absolutely a possibility. Anyway…
Let me take a complete diversion and talk about sports for a moment…
First, the NBA…I haven’t been invested in the NBA for many years because once I committed to the NHL it was hard to do both. But I’ve paid attention to the Warriors since they’re semi-local, and it’s been fun to watch them win over the years. But something interesting happened this post-season…the Denver Nuggets, the team I’ve cheered for since I was much younger just kept winning and are getting ready to play in the NBA Finals for the first time ever. I mean that’s pretty cool, and for the first time in a long time I just might watch the Finals.
Second, the NHL…UGH. First the Winnipeg Jets let me down and lost to Vegas in Round 1 while the LA Kings also let me down and let the Oilers win Round 1. Round 2 was a series I couldn’t win but given the choice I had to put my faith in the Oilers. And yeah, they let me down. And then came Dallas, and I thought, here we go, Joe Pavelski can get all the revenge. And for a minute earlier this week I thought there was a chance, but no. The Stars let me down, too. And now that Vegas team is in the Stanley Cup Final, and I have become the biggest Florida Panthers fan in life.
Finally, college baseball…One of my alma maters is playing in a regional this week - Let’s Gooooo, Mountaineers! - but my other wasn’t invited because they absolutely fell apart in the conference tournament. Boo. However, the San José State Spartans are playing in a regional this week after winning the Mountain West Conference and winning the tournament. Pretty awesome. They’re playing at Stanford on Friday night but I can’t go - boo. If they make it to the championship of the regional though, I might have to figure out how to make that happen. WVU is all the way across the country so there’s no chance of seeing them. Disappointed ASU isn’t playing but at least I’ve got some teams to cheer on.
I hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day yesterday, and the weekend that preceded it. I had a few appointments and met a friend for dinner, did some laundry and cleaned a little, and then I built this…
Yeah. It’s a Lego chess set (there are also checkers stored inside the board). And it’s awesome. I used to know how to play chess. Maybe I’ll find some time to practice one of these days.
Anyway, that’s about it for now. I hope you enjoy the rest of the week. I’m excited about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opening Thursday night. I’ve been looking forward to that one for a while. And I definitely want to see the live-action Little Mermaid. There are a lot of good movies out right now and a lot more coming in the next few months. I hope to get to quite a few.
Have a great day!

As far as June? I've been thinking the same thing. And think some more...at the end of June we'll be at the end of the first half of the year! What the what?
Long time there. I spent 31 years in Laramie but I believe you won’t be in SJ that long
