Women’s History Month
On this day in…
1847, Kate Sheppard was born. She is the most prominent member of the New Zealand Women's Suffrage movement. Her efforts in leading the call for suffrage at the head of the Temperance Union led to New Zealand becoming the first country in the world to grant women the vote in 1893.
1898, Josephine Groves Holloway was born. She founded the first unofficial Girl Scout troop for African American girls and worked for two decades to have her troops recognized by the Nashville Girl Scout Council.
1903, Clare Booth Luce was born. She served as ambassador to Italy in the 1950s, one of the top ambassador positions held by a woman at the time.
1913, Harriet Tubman died. She was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved families and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. She later helped abolitionist John Brown to recruit men for his raid on the Harpers Ferry. In the post-war era she was an active participant in the struggle for women's suffrage.
March 10th is now known as Harriet Tubman Day.
Happy Birthday
Today I get to wish my friend Amy the happiest of birthdays. I’ve known Amy since college. We’ve been to step shows , worked at the desk in our residence hall, slept on the street awaiting the Rose Bowl parade, bought Rose Bowl game tickets from scalpers (too bad our team lost that game), eaten a lot of good food, done a lot of shopping, experienced the joy of Disneyland on many occasions, saw Bruno Mars at the Hollywood Bowl, experienced the joy of Hamilton at the Pantages, and oh so much more. I was the maid of honor in her wedding, got to meet her son a few weeks after he was born, and mourned with her when her daddy left us far too soon. She’s one of the strongest women I know, and I’m lucky to have her in my life.
The Masked Singer
Okay, who else watches The Masked Singer? It returns tonight and I’m seriously giddy with excitement. The whole premise of the show is cool, and the costumes are incredible. I hardly ever guess correctly, but it doesn’t matter. It’s always cool to see who is revealed when they take off the mask.
I watched The Masked Dancer recently, which was still a cool concept, but it wasn’t quite the same. Still, I was completely engaged by the time the last three or four dancers remained. It was even harder to guess who they were, but it was still fun to try.
Anyway, that’s what I’ll be doing this evening, in case you were wondering. Hope you all have a great day!
