National French Fry Day

Anyone who knows me knows that I love French Fries. LOVE. They also know that I’m picky about my fries in a lot of ways. I don’t care for seasoned fries, they can’t have any sort of coating on them (I’m looking at you, Burger King), they need to be crispy, they need to be hot, and they shouldn’t require any sort of ketchup or other dip situation. If the fries are good, they don’t need help.

I came by this love (addiction?) naturally thanks to my great grandmother, whom I’m also named after. She made the best - THE BEST - homemade fries. And for me, she’d make them flat and round. Round potatoes, I called them. My mom makes them now (just regular fries, not round ones…though if I asked, she’d probably cut them that way for me) and hers have surpassed the greatness of my great grandmother’s. I’ve tried to make them like her but I can’t even come close. Still, my own homemade fries are pretty tasty.

McDonald’s is certainly a part of this love (again, addiction?). I remember going with my dad to McDonald’s after ballet (yes, I used to take ballet when I was like 7 years old), and getting a burger and fries. This was before Happy Meals and toys and prizes. This was the basics only, and it was always a fun time hanging with my dad. And let’s be perfectly honest, the original McDonald’s French Fries were the hands-down best. They’re still good today, but after they changed the formula a number of years ago, they were never quite the same. Still, when they’re piping hot out of the fryer, there’s not much in this world that’s better.

Apparently there are a whole bunch of deals on French Fries today, but I doubt I’ll partake in them. Those kinds of things are always much harder than they should be. However, I will be eating fries from somewhere…maybe for lunch AND for dinner. Maybe as a mid-afternoon snack. It’s hard to say.
