Song of the day:
We made it to Friday, y’all - YAY!
A few quick notes as we head into the weekend…
Movies into Musicals
There are some movies that should not be made into musicals, especially if they weren’t musicals to begin with. Tootsie is one of those movies. I saw the musical last night and it was…not good. Maybe it was better on Broadway - it did win a couple of Tonys and was nominated for a few others. Maybe I was tired. Maybe it just wasn’t for me. I appreciated that they updated the script so that a character said how bad it was that a man pretending to be a woman stole a woman’s part in a play, but it was still cringey. The songs were forgettable, the acting was over the top in many places, and the script wasn’t great, despite the changes from the movie.
I liked the movie in the 80s but I don’t think it’s a movie that could be made now. It was good because it was Dustin Hoffman, but even then it was cringey that he was pretending to be a woman.
I’m curious to know if any of you have seen the musical and what your thoughts are. Maybe it’s just me. A lot of people in the theatre seemed to be enjoying it. Also, have there been any movies that weren’t already musicals that have become good stage musicals? I’m struggling to think of any.
#FridayReads
I’m reading an excellent book right now that won’t be released until July of 2023 so I can’t say much but suffice it to say, it is GOOD. It’s set in WWII during the Siege of Leningrad, something I knew little to nothing about and would not have imagined reading or liking a book about. It’s a novel focused on the importance of books and writing during that time, not a historical account of the war, but the history is accurate and it feels like you’re there, which is not always a great feeling. If you know anything about the Siege you know just how horrible it was for the people of Leningrad. It’s truly amazing anyone survived. The spirit of those people was incredible. I can’t wait for you all to read this book. I can hardly put it down!
Weekend Plans
I hope you’ve got something fun planned for the weekend. I plan to finish going through my closets and getting ready for College H.U.N.K.S. Hauling Junk to come pick it all up on Sunday afternoon. I’ve got bags upon bags of clothes to give away, boxes to recycle, and, if I get everything done, should also have several bags of books to give away as well. Once it’s all out I’ll have more available outdoor storage for all the Christmas trees. Yes. It’s still all about the trees.
By the way, if you’re not familiar with College H.U.N.K.S. Hauling Junk, I can’t recommend them enough. I’ve used them twice and they have been extremely professional. I appreciate that they try to donate first, then recycle, and take as little to the dump as possible. H.U.N.K.S. stands for Honest. Uniformed. Nice. Knowledgeable. Service. and they absolutely deliver. I also appreciate that when you give them a good review the workers are given a bonus of sorts that helps them reduce their college loans.
I’m also planning to go to the Sharks game tomorrow, the second to last home game of what has been a lackluster season. But it’s fan appreciation so even though I originally sold my tickets (because fan appreciation has always been the last game, not the second to last game) I exchanged some other tickets and found a friend to join me. Maybe they will win, maybe not, but I think we’ll still have fun.
That should pretty much cover my weekend. What are you up to ?
