Song of the day:
Video of the day:
I don’t know about you but this was an extra long week over here. Most of yesterday I thought it was Friday. I was highly disappointed to learn it wasn’t. Work has been crazy. I think everyone is ready for a break. I’m lucky to work for an organization that closes between Christmas and the New Year. I know not everyone gets that time away but I hope you’re able to take a few days to rest and relax this holiday season. I think I’m mainly looking forward to more than a week without Zoom meetings. Woo-hoo! To be clear, Zooms and FaceTimes with friends and family are vastly different than Zoom meetings and Zoom training sessions. Only nine more days!
I usually go to a lot of movies during the time away from work, but this year I’ll just be watching a lot of movies on my TV. I’m also hoping to find time to catch up on my reading. I actually did read a book in the last week - Admission by Julie Buxbaum. It’s a great addition to the young adult book world. My review:
The starting point of this story is truly ripped-from-the-headlines but when you start getting into it, it’s about so much more. The author’s main character wrestles with her own privilege while trying to navigate being a teenager trying to get into college. Julie Buxbaum has a gift for writing teenage characters that are complex and interesting, and she did a fantastic job in this story. Chloe is likable and deeply flawed - like many humans! She’s very real, as are her friends and her sister. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and felt their joy, as well as their pain in scene after scene. I especially liked the way the story flowed back and forth between “then” and “now”. It took us into the mind of the main character and helped us see things unfold in a unique way. I highly recommend this one!
I’m currently reading The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person by Frederick Joseph. I’m only a couple of chapters in and it’s fantastic. It’s technically a young adult title but it’s relevant for everyone. Seriously. Get it.
I’m also reading President Obama’s A Promised Land. It’s brilliant. As I knew it would be. It’s going to take me a while to get through this one because it’s about a million pages long, but I’m sure I’ll finish it over the break.
What are you reading right now? What are you looking forward to this holiday season? Let me know in the comments.
Have a great day and a great weekend!
