Song of the day:
Vice President Harris is going to name her running mate today, and while many think it’s going to be Governor Shapiro from Pennsylvania, there are others leaning toward Governor Walz from Minnesota. The latter would be my choice, but I’m not voting for the VP candidate…I’m voting for Kamala. Whomever she chooses, things are going to get a lot more interesting after today.
Have you been watching the Olympics?
I haven’t watched a lot of it live, but have definitely seen a lot of gymnastics. And it’s been incredible. Simone Biles was unbelievable (as always), but so were her teammates - Jordan, Suni, Jade, Hezly - as well as the incredible Rebecca Andrade from Brazil. I’m sure by now you’ve seen the iconic photo of Rebecca, Simone and Jordan on the medal stand yesterday, with Simone and Jordan bowing down to Rebecca…pure awesomeness. The way these women support each other is a beautiful thing. And we saw similar support on the men’s side, with the men’s team losing their minds when everyone’s new hero, Stephen, finished that pommel horse event and gave the men’s team a bronze medal. And we saw Stephen praising the two who finished ahead of him in the individual pommel horse event. It was truly so great to see athletes from different countries supporting each other across the board.
I watched a little swimming, but not much else, though I have been checking the daily results to see how things are going. And once again Katie Ledecky was an absolute queen in the water. I also enjoyed seeing French swimmer (and fellow Sun Devil) Leon Marchand absolutely kill it in the pool. He is incredible. Seeing Sha’Carri and Noah medal in track was great, too. I know absolutely nothing about rugby, but it’s pretty cool that the USA women’s team won the bronze. And I saw that we won a gold in women’s surfing, which is excellent.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing countries win medals for the first time - either for the first time in a particular sport or for the first time ever. And I believe the refugee team has won at least one medal so far. What an incredible feeling that must be for all those athletes and for the people in their countries.
The joy in all of the athletes from across the globe is incredible. It reminds us of the resilience of humans, of how easy it is to be supportive, of how we are more alike than we are different, but also how our differences make us amazing.
The Unpacking Continues…
I feel like I’ve been unpacking for a year, even though it’s only been two weeks. I’m now cataloging things I know I’m missing, which is frustrating and worrisome. We’ve opened every single box but still haven’t found them. If I don’t find them by the end of the week I’ll be calling the movers to see what might have happened. Some of the items can easily be replaced, but others can’t. But they're just things, and life will go on without them. Still, I’m hoping there’s a box hiding somewhere or that they put them in other storage boxes I already had. Fingers crossed.
When I was deciding what to bring/not bring in the move I decided to donate my old desk and get something new once I got here. I don’t regret leaving it, but wow, do I ever need to get a new one in place. I didn’t realize exactly how much I needed a desk until I didn’t have one. I’ve found one I like on Amazon, but right now there’s too much stuff sitting around to build it and put it in place. So hopefully by the end of the month I can get that done.
Last night The Mother and I got all my books put away, in order and everything!, so that was a nice accomplishment. There are some books missing, which is weird, but for the most part, it’s looking pretty good.
And on Sunday, I actually cooked and we ate at the table! So we’ve definitely got progress! Never mind all those boxes behind the table. Those are all the LEGO sets that I haven’t yet started to reassemble and put in their new places. But that’s coming soon.
So I’m getting there…slowly but surely. One thing that’s tough is figuring out where to hang all the framed things I have. We’ve decided all the Sharks stuff is going on the guest room, so if you ever visit you’ll be surround by teal. For some of you that will be delightful. Maybe not as much for others. But there are many other framed items - mostly concert posters, many of which are signed - that need new homes. Once I start getting those on the walls it will feel a lot more like home.
As for all the other things…
I got my driver’s license taken care of last week - should arrive in a couple of weeks - so that’s checked off my list. Still waiting on my license plates to be delivered. Hopefully soon. I tried a nail salon close to the house and it was meh, so that’s still on the list of things to figure out. I have another one to try next time so we’ll see how that goes. I’m trying a hair stylist next week, recommended by one of my step sisters, so fingers crossed that will be a good match. I’ve been dealing with CalPERS for the last week trying to figure out why my Kaiser California didn’t get switched to Kaiser Colorado when it was supposed to, so while I wait for that to get resolved I can’t do much in the way of finding a doctor. It’s supposed to be resolved in the next couple of days and then I can embark on that task.
The Mother and I have been trying some new restaurants, and that’s been fun. Here’s a yummy meal we had last week in a place we will definitely visit again. They had lots of gluten free options, the food was delicious, and the service was excellent.

I met up with a friend who lives in the area for breakfast last weekend, and we had a great time catching up. It’s nice to be closer to friends I haven’t lived near in many years. It’s also nice to be closer to my dad and Frannie who will be visiting next weekend.
I went to see Deadpool & Wolverine last week, and it did not disappoint. I laughed a LOT, and loved every cameo and nod to all things Marvel. I won’t spoil it for you in case you haven’t seen it and plan to, but suffice it to say, it’s fantastic (though not for everyone; it’s definitely an R-rated movie). I will definitely be seeing it again soon.
When we’re not unpacking or eating, I’ve been getting The Mother up to speed on a number of movies she missed over the years, including The Princess Bride, Coco, The Sandlot, and the first Avengers movie. We’ve also been watching all the new Hallmark and Hallmark Mystery movies, and they’ve been okay. None of them have been our favorites, but we made it through most of them. The only one we tried and couldn’t get through was An Ice Palace Romance. I may try to watch it another time, but it just wasn’t working for either of us.
I haven’t been finding a lot of time to read yet, but once I get a few more things put away, I think I will be making time to sit in my comfy chair (see photo above, currently filled with pillows and stuffed animals) and enjoy a book or two.
I think that’s it for the updates. Hope you’re enjoying the week. I’ll check in again soon. The image below is a depiction of how happy I was when I found the box of coats and jackets. It’s the little things…
