On this day in:
1862, the District of Columbia abolished slavery.
1867, Alfred L. Cralle, a Black businessman and inventor, received a patent for the ice cream scoop.
1915, Ernest E. Just, a pioneering Black biologist, academic, and science writer, was the first recipient of the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal. The medal recognized his scientific achievements and his “foremost service to his race." He also founded the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
1935, Anne Raven Wilkinson was born. At the age of 20 she became the first Black woman to receive a contract to dance full time with a major ballet company.
