Song of the day:
Video of the day:
Mondays are hard. And today is especially awful because of what's happening on the other side of the world in Afghanistan. It’s heartbreaking seeing the video of people literally clinging to the US Air Force plane trying to take off. It’s heartbreaking to read about women going into hiding, of men, women and children fleeing their homeland to find safety. I know that God is in control. He know when the conflict will be resolved and how it will happen. That doesn’t mean it isn’t heartbreaking and horrifying to watch. That doesn’t mean a lot of good people will die (have already died). I found this post on Twitter, which has several posts underneath it, listing multiple ways you can give financially to support the people.
It was devastating to read that the still-rebuilding country of Haiti suffered another monstrous earthquake this weekend. I truly wonder how much more they can take, but they are some of the most resilient people on the planet and I have no doubt they will recover from this disaster. I found this post on Twitter sharing some ideas on how to give to support their recovery.
Sitting at home working seems like the biggest luxury right now. I’ve got clean drinking water, a roof over my head, and the knowledge that I am safe in my own home. I know not everyone in this country can say that, and that’s not okay either.
This world is falling apart in so many ways. Devastating earthquakes are a regular occurrence, fires, floods and droughts seem to be never ending, the temperatures continue to rise, as do the numbers of COVID-19 cases, and so many people genuinely hate other people, especially those who don’t look, act or think like them.
It’s easy to crawl under the covers and wish it all away, but that doesn’t solve anything. It’s important that we continue to find the good, to smile and laugh, to find good books and movies and TV shows, to connect with our friends and families. We don’t get much time on this earth and we need to make the best of it. Yes, we should help whenever and however we can. That might mean donating money, it might mean volunteering, it might mean regularly praying, it might mean all of those things. And all of them are part of the good.
I found some good this weekend in the video I posted above, the remake of New York State of Mind (one of my favorite Billy Joel songs). It gave me hope and made me want to book a ticket to fly to the east coast. I’m not quite ready for that but it will happen again one day. I will see Hamilton on Broadway, but until that day, I will bask in the memory of getting to see it re-open in San Francisco last week. It was truly magical.
Now go find the good in your day, in the week ahead…it’s out there, I promise.
