Pride Month Facts and LEGO
On this day in…
1987 - The New York Times decides to allow its writers to use the word “gay” as an adjectival synonym for “homosexual.” (Ronni Sanlo, Ed.D.)
2003 - General Wesley Clark, a former NATO commander shoots down the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on this day. The retired four-star general told the late Tim Russert that “we’ve got a lot of gay people in the armed forces, we always have had, always will. And I think that … we should welcome people that want to serve.” (Ronni Sanlo, Ed.D.)
2014 - The Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. re-ordained minister Allyson Robinson, who had previously been ordained as a man. This gesture symbolized the church’s acceptance of transgender individuals in the clergy. (Arlington Public Library)
And last night I built the LEGO Pride set - Everyone is Awesome!
More about Ed
In 2013 I spent my birthday in Chicago. While there, my friend Raquel (a.k.a. the person who knows everything about Ed) let me know that he was doing radio shows ahead of the concert we both had tickets to a few days after I came back to the Bay Area. We proceeded to do everything we could to get into these radio shows and ended up with access to the show in San Jose and the one in San Francisco. On the same day. Because why not? The concert was that same night, and it shall forever be known as The Day of Ed.
When we bought our tickets for the concert we got in on some deal where we also got a poster for the show, so we carried those with us to the first signing in San Jose. We also bought orange Sharpies for the signing because you know, it needed to match. It was iffy whether or not we’d be able to get things signed but Raquel has a tendency to make things happen and now that signed poster is framed and hanging on a wall in my house. Because of course it is. Raquel also made us Lego jewelry for the occasion and it was absolute perfection.
Ed played a little at both shows and did some Q & A and oh yeah, we got photos.
Raquel had won a meet and greet with Ed before the concert, but I missed out on that one, so I waited in the looooooong line that wrapped around The Warfield while she went inside to be fancy. But the wait was completely worth it as soon as he took the stage that night. We were in the sea of humanity on the main floor of the venue and it was spectacular. It was one of the last times he performed at a small venue like that, and I’ll never forget it.
But if my memory starts to fade I have these photographs to help remind me…some of y’all see what I did there…
