So here we are…New Year’s Eve…maybe the most anticipated New Year’s Eve of our lifetimes. I don’t know a single person that’s sorry to see 2020 go. Y’all, it’s been a year.
I could write a summary of everything that’s happened, everything that’s still happening…the people we lost unexpectedly, the things we did, and the things we couldn’t do…how we’re coping and so forth. But you’ve already seen a lot of these lists and there’s no need to rehash it again. Suffice it to say, we’re all ready to move on.
I’ve never been a big New Year’s Eve person. I’ve hosted one party in all of my 53 years, and I’ve been to one of those big outdoor street events once - YUCK. One year I slept on the streets of Pasadena with my ASU friends so we could have good seats for the Rose Parade. That’s also something I’d never do again, but it’s also a wonderful memory that I’ll never forget. Buying scalped tickets for the Rose Bowl game the next day is another thing I’d never do now but it worked for us back then, and we got to see our Sun Devils almost win…but I digress. Side note, that was the last college game for Jake Plummer and Pat Tillman.
I’ll be watching one bowl game on New Year’s Eve - the Arizona Bowl featuring the San José State Spartans. They’re playing Ball State and quite honestly I have no idea what their mascot is. It might be some type of bird. But it’s all about the Spartans for me. And while I still don’t think they ever should have played college football this year, it’s impossible not to cheer for the school where I’ve been employed for over 20 years. And it’s impossible not to cheer for an undefeated team that just two or three years ago only won one game. I can’t wait to watch them go for a completely undefeated season. Should be fun.
Beyond that, my only plans are to continue my binge of Blackish (I’m mid-season 5), to take a walk, and to finish The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person - an incredible book by Frederick Joseph that you should all read. Actually, every person in American should read it. It’s that good and that important.
And oh yeah, I’ll pull out the good toasting flutes and pour some sparkling cider to ring in the New Year. I’m not going to miss this one. I need to make sure it happens!
I hope you all have a good day and a great time sending 2020 packing.
Until next year…
