Beyond Van Gogh
Last night I went to the Beyond Van Gogh exhibit currently playing at the San Jose Convention Center. I had no idea what to expect but it seemed cool, and something completely different than anything I normally do, so I figured I’d check it out. And ya know what? It was pretty cool! And educational. I learned things about Van Gogh that I never would have known.
The first part of the exhibit is a walking timeline that includes facts about Van Gogh as well as excerpts from letters he and his brother exchanged. Until last night I had no idea he even had a brother. Did you know that Vincent tried to become a preacher at one point? Me either! But isn’t it fascinating?! As you can see from the photo below, even the timeline images displayed his painting style.
Once you enter the main room the art is everywhere. It’s on all the walls, it’s at your feet, and it seems to be in near-constant motion. People were standing in various places around the large space, and many were sitting in chairs or on the ground. It was fascinating how different something could look from a different vantage point.
The images melded into each other, sometimes appearing as if being drawn right in front of us. There were quotes interspersed throughout, and a lovely musical accompaniment. All in all, it was a surprisingly peaceful exhibit, and I’m so glad I went!
I posted a few short videos on my YouTube page (including the one above), in case you’re interested. I’ve also added a few photo collages below. Trust me when I say though, none of these do the experience justice. If you are in San Jose, or another city where this exhibit will be, I highly encourage you to go.
We saw the exhibit in San Francisco, but I’d go see it again in San Jose. Yes, it’s very yay!!
