Song of the day:
Video of the day:
January First.
It’s just another day in the grand scheme of things, but this year it feels especially important. It feels heavier, bigger, filled with more hope than prior January Firsts. The first day of the year is supposed to be a new beginning, a fresh start, but this year…well, this year it feels like the gates of Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory were opened and we all had a golden ticket to go inside. This year it feels like freedom from the last 300 or more days. It feels like we just might make it.
Will it be a perfect year? Obviously the answer is no. But it feels like it has so much potential to be better. To be fair, that’s not saying a whole lot. But the vaccines are here, the inauguration is right around the corner, and Georgia is looking pretty good right now. As I look outside the sun is shining, a bird just chirped, the squirrels are, well let’s face it, they’re squirrelly no matter what, and in general, online posts are hopeful. There are new books coming out, new music on the horizon, and new movies coming to your home theatre. For some of you there are new crafts to create, new recipes to make, and new activities to do with your family. There are resolutions to be made and broken, plans to be executed, and ideas to be formed.
But at the end of the day, it’s up to us to make it better. It’s up to us to keep moving forward. (Pretty sure I stole that line from Meet the Robinsons). We can’t expect things to be perfect, and should never assume there won’t be some hard days. We can’t rely on others to follow the rules, or vote the way we want them to vote, or to be happy about the same things we’re happy about. We can only control how we decide to move forward, how we respond to the bad things and the hard days, and how we work to make it better.
So, here’s to 2021. We know for a fact that it’s one day shorter than 2020 (no leap day!) so that’s something good to start with.
Have a great first day!
